Major Construction Projects in 2020 – a Year In Review
Without doubt, the major headline this year has been COVID, but there have been other notable stories in the construction sector about these 10 major UK construction projects in 2020:
2. The Crossrail project – 73 miles of railway and tube lines with 41 stations hit another delay, with trial running scheduled for early 2021, the main section now muted for opening in early 2022, with a full service operating in 2023
3. The £1.5bn Cambridge to Huntingdon road improvement scheme officially opened in May this year
5. Refurbishment of the Palace of Westminster went under review in May 2020
6. In the summer, Prime Minister Boris Johnson announced the UK Government was bringing forward £5bn of funding for capital and investment projects
7. In November, progress at the EDF Hinkley Point C site was revealed, although a similar nuclear project by Hitachi in North Wales was abandoned in September.
8. The UKs largest industrial zone Teesworks, was unveiled earlier this year on Teesside
9. In October, Heathrow Airport went to the Supreme Court to allow it to proceed with plans to build an additional runway
10. Construction of two major wind farms off the coast of Norfolk were given the go-ahead in the summer. Work on Hornsea Two - the largest offshore wind farm in the word off the Yorkshire coast started in October.
